Modified Yoga Gives Relief for Depression and Anxiety
I have been teaching yoga for twenty-two years. I got into yoga at the time because I was suicidal, not depressed. During that time, my state of mind was so low that I began to dream of killing myself." I threw myself into dumbbells, push-ups, and sit-ups. I suffered from worry, guilt, anger, insomnia, depression, and sadness. Nothing helped my state of mind until yoga. Yoga saved my life. Now twenty-two years later; I am a dedicated yoga teacher with a passion to motivate those who. The poses weren't that hard to follow, but my hamstrings, hips, and back were super tight and the stretches were painful for me. Breathing was the opposite of exercise breathing where you exhale through your mouth to maintain the force of the exercise. In comparison, in yoga, you breathe through your nose. You take a deep breath that expands your belly, sometimes holding your breath for a few seconds. I was determined to come to yoga. The movements were slow and deliberate. I found the repetition of movement monotonous. Yoga worked on your strength and you had to hold poses like downward dog, plank pose, or inverted pose for a few looonnngggg moments. Why does modified yoga work to reduce depression and anxiety? like it's a combination of elements. First, a modified is an easier yoga class than a regular beginner yoga class. I share and encourage clients to do exactly what everyone in my class can do. There is an acceptance and spirituality that is present in a strengthening or modified yoga class. The space itself is very calming and not intimidating. Doing the pose well requires focus, strength, balance, and a willingness to complete the pose. If your mind wanders, you can get off balance and fall. Plain and simple. Slow breathing brings in more oxygen, which then cleanses your organs, such as the liver, that contains one. Breathing and postures are performed to clear the stomach of gas and stimulate blood flow. Inverted poses bring blood flow to your brain, which stimulates and revitalizes your brain, skin, and lungs and helps change your mood. Poses; open your torso and hips, which causes your heart to open. When you change your physiology, from your emergency position to a closed one. Oh, standing like this, I must not be depressed. If my chest is up and my arms are out, be happy, at least not sad. In the present moment, if you stay there, during the yoga pose, you will realize that there is nothing in your life that is happening right now. You are fine. If you snap your fingers; that moment is how the present moment approaches. There is nothing in your head that is disturbing or that requires your immediate attention, no nagging voices telling you that you are worthless. It's a matter of being mindful and doing a moderate, focused yoga pose. I meditated in almost every one of my yoga classes. Meditation, when practiced, helps clients stay in the present moment and also allows them to feel loved, cared for, and in a safe place within. At first, yoga requires a lot of focus and discipline. You practice poses and breathing and your practice is NOT BEING AFRAID. As you grow in yoga, so does your self-confidence. Sometime along the way, you realize that it wasn't that long ago that you couldn't do some strength. You may not have had much luck with your balance before and now you are standing on one leg for 1 minute or more. What's important about a modified yoga class, is that it's not as difficult as power yoga. I have a modified mat and a modified chair. You experience acceptance, not rejection, which makes you feel better about yourself. Self-acceptance is a very important element in overcoming depression and anxiety.
